Games Production: Major Project (Week - 17)

This week was the start of the FMP - for the project, I wanted to make an old style Victorian brewery. However, knowing I wanted to be faithful to the setting, there would be a finite amount of props I could create, so I decided to make the time period straddle between Queen Victoria's passing and Edward VII's Coronation. This gave me an opportunity to add some additional themes and commemorative items to the scene.
This brewery would be called 'Alberton and sons' - this scene would give me a lot of room to design logos and signs, potentially for a decal atlas, that would sell the time period due to the way logos have been designed

Reference gathered from Call of Duty: Cold War, mainly to hypothesise ways on to utilise geometry within the level.

Reference gathered from Hogwarts Legacy, creating scene variation so it doesn't look 1 dimensional and adds interest to the player.

Concept and blockout:

The concept was partially AI generated. But this gave me enough inspiration to alter a few things and create my own basic blockout for the scene.

Overall, the scene looks quite small from the concept, but knowing this, I adapted it to fit a larger scale area that would include some implied space, whether it is from adding some walls, pipes or props to guide the level direction.

Main master material with Alpha mask connected to Lerp for colour control

Material instance where the colour can be changed

Additionally, to make my life easier (I will be applying this method to most props moving forward) - I created a master material for all carts, where I added a constant 3 Vector. This contained the same hex code base colour as Substance Painter, then all I needed to do when creating a material instance is drag the hue slider to make the cart base colour a different colour, in this case, from blue to red. This was made by taking the base colour in Photoshop then colour picking the blue section and making an alpha channel which would act as a mask, this way, every other colour such as, the cream of the wheels, metal, etc, would stay the same, but by connecting this newly created alpha mask to the alpha of a Lerp, it gives control over the colour.

Logo:

Example of some Logos with Victorian Motif designs

When trying to design a logo, the best thing to do is gather reference and see what the key motif and design elements are. In the case of Victorian style logos, there tends to be a lot of baroque patterns, swishing letters. The general typography sets it apart from other designs, for example, you can tell designs apart for Mexican typography and Slavic typography, just as an example.

Here is the example of my logo for Alberton Brewing.
It contains similar typography standards to the reference above, having swooping and curving letters, as well as having smaller font sizes for variation.
